Did I mention that these homemade nut milk recipes go beautifully with my granola recipes?! There are so many variations we can play with for this series so buckle up because we are in for a ride.

I’ve tried using different nuts and seeds for my dairy free milks but I always come back to cashews. It has a gorgeous richness to it that makes the final product so creamy. I love adding hemp seeds as you know, but I thought why not jazz it up with some fresh juicy strawberries? Do you remember the Nestle Strawberry Milk from when you were a kid? It came in a syrup that you would add to milk. It was all I ever wanted but my mom, being the wise woman she is, never bought it for us. Thanks mom! Let’s get into it!

Homemade Strawberry Cashew Milk Ingredients

  • Raw Cashews: If you’ve never made cashew milk before, you might not think that the type of cashew matters, but it does! Go with raw cashews – anything else will not turn out with the same flavor. Even though you will add salt to the recipe, using salted cashews is not the way to go. Raw cashews provide a neutral, creamy base that blends smoothly into milk without any added flavors that could interfere with the taste.
  • Strawberries: You can use frozen strawberries for this recipe if fresh ones are not available to you at the time. Strawberries add a natural sweetness and a slight pink hue to the cashew milk, which is just darling. They are also packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, making your milk both delicious and nutritious.
  • Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds are a powerhouse of nutrition, adding a slightly nutty flavour to the milk. They are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; essential for heart health. Additionally, hemp seeds provide a good amount of protein, making the milk more filling and beneficial for muscle repair and growth.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla enhances the overall flavor profile of the cashew milk, adding a warm, sweet, and aromatic note. Using real vanilla extract is recommended for the best flavor, but you can also use vanilla bean paste or even scrape a vanilla bean for a more intense vanilla taste.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt is essential to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients. It helps balance the sweetness of the strawberries and vanilla, making the milk taste more well-rounded and delicious. Opt for sea salt or Himalayan pink salt for a more subtle and complex taste.
  • Filtered Water: Using filtered water is crucial for the best-tasting cashew milk. It ensures that no impurities or off-flavors from tap water affect the taste of your milk. Filtered water also helps achieve a smoother, more consistent texture when blending the cashews and other ingredients.

How to Make Cashew Milk – No Straining

One of the best things about making this strawberry cashew milk is that it doesn’t require straining! With a high speed blender your cashews will blend so smoothly that you get a creamy, silky milk without any pulp. To make this possible you NEED to start by soaking one cup of raw cashews in water overnight (or at least for 12 hours) to soften them for easier blending.

After soaking, drain and rinse the cashews, then blend them in a high-speed blender with 4 cups of filtered water, 1 cup of strawberries (fresh or frozen), 1/2 cup of hemp seeds, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Blend on high for 30 seconds to a minute until smooth and creamy. Carefully transfer the cashew milk to a glass container with a lid, and store it in the fridge for up to 7-9 days.

How to Store Cashew Milk

Storing this delicious cashew milk properly is crucial to maintain its freshness. I highly suggest on using a glass mason jar or a glass milk jug with a tight-fitting lid to keep the milk fresh for up to 7-9 days. Always give it a good shake before use, as natural separation can occur. If you prefer your cashew milk extra cold, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it. These cashew milk ice cubes are perfect for cooling down your coffee or adding to smoothies without diluting the flavor.

How to Use Homemade Cashew Milk in Recipes

You can honestly use this just as you would use any other plant based milk or regular milk! It’s amazing and will give everything the most beautiful creamy richness!

  • Coffee and Tea: Use it as a dairy-free creamer for your hot beverages.
  • Smoothies: Blend into your favourite smoothie recipes for added creaminess and nutritional benefits.
  • Baking: Substitute cashew milk for dairy milk in baking recipes for a delicious twist.
  • Oatmeal or Overnight Oats: Use with your oats anywhere you might ordinarily use water or milk. It pairs so deliciously with my granola recipes.
  • Sauces and Soups: Use it as a base for creamy sauces and soups to add a rich, nutty flavour.

What Are the Health Benefits of Cashew Milk

Cashew milk is rich in nutrients, and packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants such as magnesium, vitamin E, and zinc. It also contains heart-healthy fats that can help lower cholesterol levels. Additionally, cashew milk is a good source of calcium, which is essential for maintaining strong bones.

This plant based milk is also ideal for someone looking to avoid gluten, dairy, additives and refined sugar. Replacing a store bought milk with something clean and homemade like this strawberry cashew milk can help support weight management as it is lower in calories compared to dairy milk.

FAQ About Making Cashew Milk

Is cashew milk healthier than almond milk?

  • Cashew milk and almond milk each have their own benefits. Cashew milk is creamier, lower in calories, and rich in healthy fats and magnesium, making it a good choice for recipes requiring thickness. However, it has less protein. Almond milk, often fortified with calcium and lower in fat, is more widely available and versatile but thinner in consistency. The best choice depends on your dietary needs and taste preferences.

Why do you soak cashews for milk?

  • Soaking cashews is a crucial step because it softens them, making them much easier to blend. Doing this will yield you a super smooth, creamy milk without the need for straining. Plus, soaking helps to activate the cashews, enhancing their nutrient absorption and making your homemade cashew milk even more nutritious.

Will cashew milk froth like regular milk?

  • Cashew milk can froth up quite nicely, especially if you use a good frother and blend it well. While it might not froth exactly like regular cow’s milk, it still creates a lovely foam that’s perfect for lattes and cappuccinos.

Why choose making your own cashew milk over store bought cashew milk?

  • Making your own plant-based milk at home has several benefits over store-bought options. First, you have complete control over the ingredients, ensuring there are no unwanted additives, preservatives, or excess sugars. This means you can enjoy a healthier, purer milk that’s tailored to your taste and dietary needs. Plus, homemade plant-based milk is often fresher and more flavorful.

Additionally, making your own plant-based milk can be more cost-effective in the long run, especially if you buy ingredients in bulk. It also allows you to experiment with different flavors and combinations, giving you a versatile and customizable alternative to store-bought varieties. Ultimately, homemade plant-based milk offers a more nutritious, economical, and personalized option for your daily needs.

Can I use a food processor instead of a blender? What is the best blender to use when making cashew milk?

  • When making cashew milk, a high-speed blender is your best bet. It ensures the cashews blend smoothly into a creamy milk without any gritty texture. While a food processor can work in a pinch, it might not achieve the same silky consistency.

Why is cashew milk so low in calories compared to other kinds of plant based milks?

  • Cashew milk is low in calories compared to other plant-based milks primarily because it has a higher water content and fewer added ingredients. When you make cashew milk at home, you control the ratio of cashews to water, often resulting in a milk that is lighter in calories. Additionally, cashews themselves are relatively low in carbohydrates and sugars, contributing to the lower calorie count.
